Call me nuts, but I just emailed the PA Harness Racing Commission, who votes on these licenses, and asked them to give a license to Johnstown. The email I got from the PA website is RA-Harness@state.pa.us and the email didn't bounce back. Not sure if emailing them would help, but what the heck.

I wonder how many people were around here when the unemployment rate was 25%.

This is probably a pie in the sky proposal. The job numbers are inflated as is the potential economic impact. At first there would be too many people hired for the amount of work that will be generated. The 1500 permanent employees would quickly become 750 then 500 then 400. This is the case for most new businesses. Casinos are everywhere now. They are becoming like shopping malls. Each new casino that is built just spreads the wealth a bit more until it is diluted. A local casino would primarily draw locals. Do we have enough locals to keep a casino afloat? The building of the Galleria was supposed to generate a lot more development in that area then it did.

How much more development WOULD have been at the Galleria had the Richland Town Centre development not happened?

Long time established tracks are struggling to stay open all over the country, hard to imagine that the cost to build a new track would make any sense. In Maryland they approved slots to "save" the horse racing industry (and of course so that we can buy school kids books). Even if you could convince me that building a casino was a smart idea for the area, I don’t think adding a race track has to be part of that equation.
On a side note, Maryland approved slots close to two years ago and have yet to come to an agreement on any casino sites due to lack of interest by investors. I attribute part of that to being late to the party, PA, DE, and WV seem to be close enough for the casual gamble to make the trip.
On a side side note, it was a ballot initiative in MD and I would get robo calls that would list the initiative number and by voting for it, it would be able to pump millions into the school system without raising taxes, nowhere in the call was there any mention that the initiative was for slots. Nice truth in advertising.
This idea is for PSU, put the track inside the point and put the casino on the river.

There is no turf in harnness racing. They only run on a dirt sand mix which usually has to be shipped in.

It was a joke. I'm pretty sure they won't be racing horses in Point Stadium. Pretty sure.
